Age 5 Development – Language Skills
Language has two main points:
- Receptive language (understanding): The language is intelligible.
- Expressive language (using language): Using language, speech, sign, or alternative forms of communication to convey wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas.
Listening
- Follows the conversations of the people around.
Vocabulary
- His repertoire continues to expand.
- Usually understands words related to color and shapes (eg, red, square).
- Sorts objects into simple categories (e.g. animals, food)
Sentence Information
- Uses at least 4-5 words in a sentence.
Grammar Knowledge
- Makes sentences in past and future tense.
- Uses belonging pronouns (his, their).
- Uses comparison and width expressions.
- Recognizes singular and plural expressions.
- Makes simple sentences in the past tense.
- It uses the conjunction “because”.
- Uses adverbs in sentences. Uses plural expressions.
Concept Knowledge
Mid to late 4 year old:
- Position: in the middle, around, far, between, along, near/near, at the end.
- Size: short (length), short (height), tall, overweight.
- Position: 4, most, less
At the end of 4-5 years:
- Position: in front, in the row, in the corner, in the middle
- Size: slim Quantity: 5 pcs, pair
- Other: same, different (size); different (function)
Questions
- How to understand the questions.
- Asks the meaning of words.
Possible Situations Encountered When It Doesn’t Progress
- Socialization may be difficult.
- Due to lack of understanding and attention, he may try to learn by imitating others.
- May have difficulty following directions at home or kindergarten.
- It may be difficult to be understood by peers.
- It may be difficult to be understood by people he does not know.
- May have difficulty expressing their wants, needs, thoughts and desires.
- May have difficulty answering questions properly.
- He may have problems with speaking fluency because he cannot find the right word.
