2 Years Development – Gross Motor Skills
Gross motor (physical) skills are abilities that require whole-body movement and involve the body’s large (as core stabilizers) muscles to perform everyday actions such as standing, walking, running, and sitting upright. It also includes hand-coordination skills such as ball-playing skills (throwing, catching, hitting).
Developmental Stage
- Sits, crawls and walks
- Learns to walk well and becomes less lazy about walking/running
- Pushes the ball (can’t hit it exactly)
- Walks smoothly and turns corners
- Starts running
- Can carry or drag a toy while walking
- Climbs and descends on furniture without support
- Go up and down stairs with support
- Picks up toys without falling
Possible Situations Encountered When It Doesn’t Progress
- Lag in game playing abilities –
- Difficulty interacting with the environment due to delay in ability to take active action
- Poor muscle development
- Poor muscle development in running and jumping ability
- Delay in ability to play games and interact with the environment on their own
- Weakness in interacting socially
